Seventh grade students utilized their design skills and scientific knowledge to build a canoe. I collaborated with Cooper School's Project Lead the Way team and All Hands Boat Works to incorporate STEAM in the seventh grade art curriculum.

During the Public Art unit, students were inspired by a local environmental artist named Jesse Graves. Students worked in small groups to make a stencil encouraging others to take care of the environment. Once the stencil was complete, we used mud, sponges and the stencil to share our message with the public. Each group wrote an artist statement to share with the class.

Middle school students were invited to participate in a shoe design contest sponsored by Vans. Participants created templates of their design from several viewpoints. Three winners were chosen based on originality, thematic design, craftsmanship, and design. The winners were given a pair of Vans shoes to complete their design on.

Fifth grade students used library resources to research Chinese New Year. Upon gathering information, students worked together plan a traditional Chinese New Year celebration. Students planned artifacts to build, food to prepare and traditions to incorporate. This photograph shows fifth grade students visiting a first grade classroom. They taught first grade students what they learned, demonstrated a dragon dance, and gifted oranges and and red envelopes to students.
